Cyber-Enabled Manufacturing (CEM) and Industry 4.0: Perspectives and Future Directions
Advances in communication technology, computational modeling, and control algorithms have enabled the transformation of data into knowledge and control of machines and systems in real-time with high accuracy via smart sensory devices and wireless networks. Such systems are known as cyber-physical systems (CPS). Cyber-enabled Manufacturing (CeM) is a CPS that focuses on manufacturing machines and systems. As information technology becomes robust and mature, developed countries such as Germany are promoting the concept of Industry 4.0. The intent is to integrate designers, manufacturers, and consumers in a seamless way to increase productivity, reliability and customer satisfaction. This lecture will describe key CeM and Industry 4.0 concepts; what has been done so far; and what the challenges are. Existing work will be covered and ongoing projects will be provided as illustrations. Potential research areas are included throughout the talk.

Plenary Session Title:
Cyclic processes modelling and performance evaluation
Manufacturing efficiency is more and more often defined not only as the capacity for low-cost production of specified quality products, but also as the capacity for quick execution of variable and low-volume orders at reduced manufacturing costs. In this context, special attention is paid to the problems of modeling, performance evaluation and design of multimodal networks expressing their cyclic nature. One of the major challenges in design of DSS aimed at different infrastructure domains supporting energy, money, data and material flows as well as passenger transfers media in their flow through the chain of different modes, is the reduction of logistics costs occurring in the course of the passing through the chain of different modes.
This talk focuses on work over the last 10 years by a variety of groups interested in rigorous specification and systematic synthesis of decision-making models. Implementation of well-known declarative/algebraic modelling-driven approach enabled us to provide new approaches to solving these problems. A major shift is the move from “design then verify” to “specify then synthesize” approaches to DSS design that allow simultaneous synthesis of high-performance, robust cyclic schedules and correct-by-construction cyclic steady states reachability procedures. This talk will provide an overview of the relevant theories and techniques applied in this area, as well as include examples of their application to leveling of multi-batch production flows and robust routing/scheduling of supply chains.
